2017 Season
Preview
The 2016 Thunder Bay
season ended with the Colorado Gladiators once again atop the league holding their
second Championship trophy compiling a 12-5 post season record along the way.
The Gladiators were tested early in the post season nearly squandering a three games
to none lead over Jersey to hold on to win 2-1 in game 7 and then cruised
to wins over the Saints and Paddlers to capture the trophy. This was the
second time the Paddlers and Gladiators met in the series and Casey is 8-1 in those two
H2H match ups. Congratulations Casey on a great season!

2014
& 2016 Champions |
The American
League is now 10-3 in World Series History (2005 Los Angeles, 2007 Chemung
and 2012 San Antonio are the only NL teams ever to win) and no team
currently in the National League has ever won our championship (due to LAH
and SAS moving to AL).
As the 2016 season ended a new
era in the TBBL is set to begin. For the first time in our leagues
history, we have voted to revamp the divisions and will be utilizing inter league play
for the upcoming season. Each league will now have four teams per division
(East, Central and West) and 16 of the 24 owners voted for a change to the post
season format following what MLB does. Three division winners in each league with 2 wildcard spots
up for grabs will
make the post season one wild and crazy ride this year.
We also have one new owner on
board for 2017 and one new general manager. The Kansas City Barons have
left the league and the new club is the Beale Street Flippers managed by Lee
Vieron and his GM George Kurtinitis. Both gentlemen came from the Bunt League
and are very familiar with the current TBBL owners and I am sure will fit right
in with our league moving forward.

For the first tine in many
years, the early draft picks were not off disk players. Jonathan Villar
was selected first overall by the Lincoln Tunnel Rats followed up by Aledmys Diz
to Springfield, Sueng Hwan Oh to Stone Mountain and Dan Straily to Michigan.
The first off disk player was selected at 1.15 by Protect (Braxton Garrett). Keith Law of ESPN recently published
his
Top 100 Prospects list
for 2017 and Andrew Benintendi of Protect
tops his list. The Nuts have the most prospects on Laws list with 10 in
total but perhaps the best young team is the Isotopes. Springfield has the second highest team WAR at 68.4 and
the lowest team payroll at just under $45 million making them a team built on
young and upcoming players. Springfield will run out regulars in their
lineup that include Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts, Carlos Correa, Freddie
Freeman and Corey Seager along with having Aaron Sanchez, Gerrit Cole and
Michael Fulmer on the mound. This club took its lumps in the past but have
accumulated perhaps the best young group in the league and will be a force in
the American League for many years. The table to the right indicate how
many players each TBBL club owns from Law's Top 100 list. The only team
without a player in the list is mine (sigh).

The Fort Wayne Komets nabbed this
future Hall of Famer in the 10th round of this year's draft. Mark
Teixiera is this first basemen who has been to the World Series four
times but came up empty each trip. Mark's last hope for a TBBL title lie
in Stan's hands.

The current open stadiums for
the 2017 season are U.S. Cellular Field, Citizens Bank Ballpark, Globe Life Park,
Tropicana Field, Great American Park and The Coliseum. If any teams are
looking to change parks please let me know as the deadline is a few days away.
The TBBL witnessed, for the
second straight year, an All Time
High for Transactions. Utilizing free agent acquisitions is a great way to
avoid over using players and the number of transactions has increased each of
the past four seasons. The table to the left shows Trades and
Transactions by Year since the inception of the league. The 2017 season,
which is still in off season mode has already seen 22 trades made which shows
the excitement for the season to begin. The theme of the off season seems
to have been with teams moving starting pitching. Steven Matz, Jon Lester,
Tanner Roark, Julio Urias, Corey Kluber, Sonny Gray and Jordan Zimmermann have
all been moved in a flurry of activity.
The Lincoln Tunnel Rats dealt a
few of the afore mentioned starters and have netted in return Nick aaaSenzel,
Pedro Severino, James Paxton, Yasmany Tomas and Domingo Santana. The Rats
also drafted Villar and Tommy Joseph in Round 1 to go along with their new
acquisitions.
As we mentioned earlier, the
TBBL has a new alignment for 2017. The new divisional alignments will
create new rivalries but perhaps the toughest division is the AL West. All
four teams have a legitimate chance to win it all not only this season but at
any point in the near future. The Isotopes are the up and coming team
while the Gladiators are the returning champions and perhaps three postseason
teams could come out of this one division in 2017.

My predictions last
year were pathetic to say the least. Of the four divisions, the
only prediction I got right was the Convicts in the NL East. I only predicted
7 of the 24 spots correctly and just one Division winner right. If
I were a major leaguer 7 of 24 would net me a .292 batting average but
in predictions its more like being the owner of the Bob Uecker cheap seats.
The Most Valuable Players from
2016 were Josh Donaldson (.311-38-140) of San Carlos and Edwin Encarnacion
(.286-52-150) of California. Our Cy Young Winners were Clayton Kershaw (21-6,
2.73
ERA) of the Nuts and Zack Grienke (23-3, 1.71 ERA) of San Carlos. Erick
Aybar and Mike Zunino hit for the cycle and Encarnacion and Ian Kinlser tied an
all time record with 11 at bats in one game.
The San
Antonio/Chemung Franchise continued their streak of never missing the post
season making it 13 straight years while two franchises still have never
made a post season appearance. Look for those notes in their team capsule.

once again are utilizing rankings from MLB Network’s “Shredder” which takes into

2016 TBBL Stats Displayed |
The Isotopes are the only team
with two players ranked # 1 in Cory Seager and Mookie Betts. Jersey leads the list with 10
Top 10 Right Now players (3 of which are pen arms however) while San Carlos,
Colorado and Mad City each have 8 players on the list. Mad City's Mike
Trout continues to be the best player in baseball and owns the line below:
Trout hasn't missed a game in
more than 3 years and talk is he is looking at a "Ripken" like run in the TBBL.
He has been a cornerstone for the Paddlers and MLB considers him the top WAR
player. The WAR stat continues to be
one of baseballs trendy stat measures and it has helped me shape my predictions the past
few seasons. Unlike WAR, the salaries of players in MLB are bloated and that
translates to the TBBL rosters as well. More and more web sites are popping up
analyzing stats and coming up with new measures and another favorite of mine
is the Baseball Think Factory, a sabermetrically-oriented baseball web site that
features the day's prominent news stories. This site has been around for a
while and is a great read as is the Fangraphs site. For the measures
below, I utilize an Access database with stats
from www.fangraphs.com
and match it up to the TBBL rosters. This database is used throughout the
season on our web site and we will start using charts to better tell the story
of the TBBL in 2017. Below is this year's Salary and WAR

Last year I mercifully ripped the Protect Your Nuts franchise
for having a payroll of $239 million. Well, I probably should have kept my
yap shut since my team now tops the salary list at nearly $277 MILLION DOLLARS and is the TBBL's
version of the Evil Empire. Probably my best sign on the team is
Pablo Sandoval who makes $17.6 million which equates to just under 3 million per
at bat last year. Other bloated salaries include Robinson Cano's $24m and
Rick Porcello's $20 plus million. As mentioned earlier, the Isotopes have
the second highest team WAR and the lowest team salary suggesting future years
of dominance in the American League. The highest salary of any player in
the TBBL belongs to Clayton Kershaw ($34.571m) of the Nuts and Protect has three
players total who make north of $25 million (Kershaw, Miggy and Verlander).
Free Agent Alex Rodriguez is still looking for a team if anyone is interested in
him and his $20m salary.

2017
Predictions and Simulation Results |
My predictions for the 2017
season are highlighted in each teams capsule and in many cases I used
owner provided comments to craft the write-up. For the teams who did not
supply comments, we hired a Ghost Writer to contribute to the Preview.
Anyone want to take a guess at who the Ghost Writer was? Now, the moment everyone
has been waiting for ... my prediction as to who will win the 2017 TBBL Championship
is the
Jersey Damage Inc.. So yes, we have been down this road before (in
2015) and I probably jinxed myself then and will again but so be it. My
streak of never having picked the TBBL Champion continued last year and will
most likely be longer than Joe D's hitting streak from 1941. We went all
in this season knowing it was David Ortiz' last year. We added two top
starters in Kluber and Roark (and we lost out on Lester) and have several
players at key positions with career type seasons. Our bench has some pop
with Stephen Drew and Franklin Gutierrez and the pen might be the best in the league.
We are hopeful David Ortiz ends his career with an MVP and Kluber wins 20.
If those things can happen I feel good about my chances. By no means is
the American League easy though. In the West, there are the Gladiators who
have simmed extremely well again and the Isotopes who remind me of the 2016 Cubs
to contend with. San Carlos is loaded too and has aces atop his rotation
while the Capitals and Saints from the Central look equally tough. 2017 should be fun but
looks to be very competitive in the AL.
The National League is more or
less has been and always will be a guessing game for me. We chose Protect and California for the NLCS
last year and neither team made it that far. Why not go back to the well
and say both the Convicts and Nuts will meet again in the NLCS. The
Paddlers will probably have something to say about my prediction considering
they are the defending champs which makes them a dangerous team along with West
Orange and Glenview. Consistent sims for West Orange lead me to think the
East will have two playoff teams and the West will have two teams as well
leaving the Central to the Paddlers. The Nuts and the Bitteroots square
off in the one game playoff (these two teams meet all the time) and the Nuts
make it all the way through to meet my club in the Series. Kershaw comes
down with the flu in game one and Jersey sweeps to win our first ever title.
Then the alarm goes off and I realize I have to be in the office in 30 minutes.

On March 2, 2017, the annual season simulation
was run. The table to the right shows the final standings of the sim.
There is a link to your team reports in each grid. The Paddlers had the
best record during the sim with 109 wins while Jersey was the only other 100+
win club. Mark Trumbo of the Smackdown whacked 64 HR and drove in 155 runs
but was edged out by Robinson Cano for the MVP of the American League. Cano
went .317-56-128 and scored 124 runs setting the pace for Jersey and Ryan Braun
of the Convicts was the NL MVP tallying a line of .328-41-111. Starling Marte of the Gladiators led the league in steals with 57 while fellow Gladiator
Chris Davis struck out 237 times! Jose Altuve of the Paddlers came up huge
as well with a .324-25-103 line to go with 34 steals and 136 runs scored.
Mad City upper management requested a recount in the voting but was denied!
The best pitchers during the
sim were among the playoff teams led by Clayton Kershaw of the Nuts and his 18-7
record with a 2.37 ERA. Clayton also struck out 268 batters but was sadly
overused by 12 starts and was benched for the playoffs. Madison Bumgarner
of Mad City won the NL Cy Young with a 21-3 record and a 2.74 ERA while fellow
Paddlers Max Scherzer and Martin Perez each won 17 games. Tanner Roark of
Jersey led the AL in wins with 20 but teammate Rick Porcello won the AL Cy Young
with an 18-7 mark and a 3.21 ERA. Jose Fernandez of the Aces was 16-9 with
301 strike outs in his final season on the disk.
Chris Devenski of the Flyers
had the most saves in the TBBL with 38 but he also blew the most with 9.
Zack Britton of San Carlos led the AL with 30 saves but his 2.04 ERA was nearly
4 times that of his real life ERA (0.54).

On the
Farm: |
Not much on the farm
considering we didn't have a pick until Rd 6.
Grabbed two Yankees in Chance Adams and Destin Folwler
just to annoy Greg (lol).
|
Strengths: |
Power Arms and Power Bats.
6 batters have 25+ HRs while Chapman and Miller have sick K/9
ratios. |
Weaknesses:
|
Ian Desmond has been
non-existent in DMB for the past few years and moves to
LF in 2017. Brad Miller isn't a great SS but he
still hit
30 bombs. |
GM Thoughts: |
I don't think I slept for
a week after losing to Colorado in the LDS round last
year so we made it a point to go all in for 2017.
Ortiz is in his last season and we will run him out
there every game along with leaning on Klubot as much as
possible. |
Key Moves: |
Acquired Corey Kluber and Matt Carpenter during the off
season which gives us the top of the rotation guy we
needed and a good on base third basemen for the leadoff
spot. or 5 hole |
Prediction:
|
1st Place -- All in for 2017 considering the

On the
Farm: |
Probably a year too late, the Rats focused on prospects
and added some good depth with Senzel, Soto, and Tellez.
Plus some players that have already made appearances in
the Pros with Toles, Vogelbach, Mancini, Santana and
Severino. Things are looking up but it still will be a
long time to payoff. |
Strengths: |
None really,
this is a really weak team, but probably we moved from a strong
pitching team (Lester and Keuchel and Roark were all traded) to
better offense by adding some nice bats. |
Weaknesses:
|
Will
be tough to meet all the usage limits this year, but
pitching is particularly terrible. Jered Weaver, Fister,
and Miguel Gonzalez will have no place to hide and will
have to have full usage. |
GM Thoughts: |
This
team might set new records of poor performance and will
be in the running for first pick next year. For sure we
waiting a year too long to rebuild and looking at last
year’s draft, spent too many picks on players to help in
the current. Probably the product of a few years of
narrowly making the playoffs with great pitching caused
too much reluctance to pack it in. |
Key Moves: |
Trading Lester brought some great young talent that will
hope to pay off along with the draft picks this year for
trading Roark and Keuchell. Villar, Tommy Joseph and
Nick Senzel obtained in the first round this year could
be long term helps along with Paxton, Tomas and Santana.
We will still need some of these drafts picks to payoff
to turn this team around and will need pitching if that
ever happens. |

On the
Farm: |
The
aaa farm has a few good prospects in Rafael Devers,
Yadier Alvarez, and Corey Ray but isn't super-deep.
However, the youngster outlook looks better when
including some players that recently graduated from the
farm like Kyle Schwarber, Hunter Renfroe, Lucas Giolitto,
Reynaldo Lopez, and Raul Mondesi (although many of them
have their warts). |
Strengths: |
Offense is the strength but probably won't be enough to
carry the team to a playoff berth. The offense is led by
MVP Kris Bryant, Daniel Murphy, and AL home-run leader
Mark Trumbo with some decent role players and may be one
of the leaders in runs scored.. |
Weaknesses:
|
But
the pitching and defense will likely lead to the team
getting outscored. The starters will provide a good
amount of league average pitching, but the defense will
let them down both in terms of unearned runs and
ball-in-play average. The relievers won't help the
starters much either. |
GM Thoughts: |
The
offense should be fun, but the team seems like it will
give up a lot of runs and have a net negative run
differential. The team will build around Kris Bryant and
hope a good portion of its youth pans out. |
Key Moves: |
TBD.
Drafting Kris Bryant when he was in college a few years
ago was big for the future of the team. |
Prediction:
|
3rd

like 76-86. |

On the
Farm: |
Houston is hoping that F.
Martes steps into the Houston rotation and shows signs
of being more than a mid rotation pitcher. Much further
away are Maitan and Tatis Jr.. Either or both could
take a huge step forward this season . . . or totally
stall out. And, although he's not officially on the
farm, we are hoping that Carson Kelly continues to look
like a potential heir to Y. Molina. |
Strengths: |
The infield is great with Segura,
Machado and K. Seager. Springer in the outfield looks good.
Hoping that Buxton finally breaks through for good. |
Weaknesses:
|
The starting rotation is a
shambles. Former stalwart, Felix Hernandez stumbled a
bit last year. Gausman and Manaea look capable of being
solid. But, rounding that out with the likes of Shields
and Lewis will sink any team. |
GM Thoughts: |
I think it will be a long
year and I'm hoping to avoid usage penalties in this
league for a change. |
Key Moves: |
Not many made. Hoping the
young guys pan out enough that making some moves makes
sense. |
Prediction:

On the
Farm: |
I
went heavy on uncarded players again this season. I’m
really excited about some of my future OFs and SPs.
Typically, I lean too heavily on offense so I did try to
balance this out by going with a few young pitchers such
as Cal Quantrill and Sixto Sanchez |
Strengths: |
Defense
should be a strength this season. While the Capitals should
score some runs, I think our biggest asset is with the glove.
We caught some breaks from DMB in that 5 position players are
rated Ex on D (whole infield is EX) and another 2 VG. If our
pitchers can keep it in the park we have a chance to field it. |
Weaknesses:
|
Pitching as usual. We have depth and hoping for a
rebound next year from some veterans like Garrett
Richards, Francisco Liriano, Danny Salazar and Edison
Volquez but this season might be tough running some of
those guys out there consistently. |
GM Thoughts: |
I
think where the team is positioned but I think we are
still one year away. Looking for Julio Urias, Luke
Weaver, Brock Stewart, German Marquez to make a major
step for next season. If the Capitals can field a
solid starting rotation, I think we have a chance to
contend in the future. |
Key Moves: |
I
traded Paul Goldschmidt to Chris this offseason. He’s
a tremendous player I think he balanced my team in
filling a catching void with JT Realmuto and provided me
a young arm in Urias. Hoping that can be a win-win trade
for both teams. In a couple of "win now" moves, I dealt
prospects like Lewis Brinson and Alex Verdugo for
veterans Dustin Pedroia, Sandy Leon and Matt Bush. |
Prediction:
|
1st place. The Capitals have a strong and deep
roster but I don’t think the arms and bullpen are quite
where we want them to be just yet. With the new
divisions, it’ll be a dog fight with Michigan, Houston
and the always contending San Antonio! If all the
chips fall for the Caps we could win 90 games. |

On the
Farm: |
I
drafted Stephen Gonsalves despite not being crazy about
LHPs. They seem to get bashed harder than RHPs in the
DMB universe. But his success in the minors has been
breathtaking and I think he is an ace in the making. I
am gambling protection slots on Alex Faedo and JJ
Schwarz being stars despite still being in college this
year. I count Hoffman and Nimmo as being on the farm
despite being carded. Other than Piscotty and Grichuk,
we haven’t had a lot of success graduating farm hands.
Josh Bell should be a step in the right direction. |
Strengths: |
Posey isn’t our best catcher this year. Outfield
depth. Stanton and Bautista are MVP talents despite
down years. Piscotty, Grichuk and Peralta are very good
and young. I hope Nimmo develops. Hey Giants: let
Jarret Parker play!!! |
Weaknesses:
|
Starting pitchers are horrible. Aging middle infield.
Injuries this year. |
GM Thoughts: |
We’ve had superb success since moving to San Antonio,
winning three championships in those five years and
losing to the eventual champs in the other two years.
But this will be my worst TBBL team unless the pitching
is worlds better than I expect. Injuries to key players
like Bautista and Duda will weigh down the offense. |
Key Moves: |
None this year. I quietly added some barely-adequate
SPs in the draft, though not enough. |
Prediction:
|
4th Place. I
think we will struggle to top 90 wins because of the
terrible SP and reduced offense. I don’t think we will
do much if we somehow sneak into the playoffs. |

On the
Farm: |
Getting younger is still the priority for
the Halos and 2017 will be the youngest Halo team in
franchise history. The ML roster will include 7 players
who have graduated from the MiL within the last year:
Alfaro (C), Difo (2B), Foltynewicz (SP), Quinn (OF),
G.Sanchez (C), Swanson (SS) & Turner (CF). The team is
expecting Folty, Sanchez & Turner to all see meaningful
time this season. With Swanson, Quinn & Difo hoping to
be added to the mix next season. This year’s draft
saw 6 new faces come on board: Gordon (SS), Kaprielian
(SP), O’Neill (OF), Rutherford (OF), Sheffield (SP) &
Yamada (SS). The club is hoping that they stick around
longer than last year’s picks Naylor and Nunez who both
were released at the end of last season. Other than
Rutherford who is still several years away and Yamada
who probably won’t come over from Japan for several more
years, the rest could be with the club as early as
2018. The hold overs on the Farm are Adames (SS), Mateo
(2B) and Austin Meadows (OF) who continue to rise on the
prospect rankings and could graduate next year. |
Strengths: |
For the 1st time in franchise
history, the Halo’s need to sell their fans on Youth and
Patience as the strength of the club in 2017 is “Future
Potential” which will not win a lot of games in 2017.
|
Weaknesses:
|
Unfortunately, the weaknesses this season
are major league ready pitching and hitting. The team is
going to be VERY active on the free agent market trying
to piece-meal together enough at bats and innings to
survive the season. |
GM Thoughts: |
We have been talking about rebuilding on
the fly for several seasons now and for that to work you
need some luck, but unfortunately old age, bad decisions
and injuries have finally caused “on the fly” to be
officially dropped. It is now a complete rebuild. For a
franchise that has never finished below .500 or missed
the playoffs; the prospects of a 100 loss season are
daunting. Hopefully health and some luck will have the
Halos chasing banners again in 2018. |
Key Moves: |
Acquiring Gary Sanchez two seasons ago
making my Yankee dreams come true. -- by TBBL Ghost Writer |
Prediction:
|
4th

Saints fail to reach the post season. Somehow
though I expect Greg to keep this team competitive until
his Scranton team comes up. |

On the
Farm: |
We
all think out prospects will become stars, but ouf hopes
are sky high for Japan's two way superstar, Shohei Otani,
once he makes his debut. Ozzie Albies has potential to
be the next Jose Altuve, aka: A hit machine. |
Strengths: |
Kind
of a solid, all-around club: Decent starting, decent
bullpen, decent lineup |
Weaknesses:
|
Bullpen is not deep enough as it needs to be to to win
home duels vs top clubs at Coors Field. Its mayhem there |
GM Thoughts: |
Some
decent talent here, and a lot of solid seasons from the
veterans, but the Gladiators will be hard-pressed to
repeat as Champs. Great year for watching our young
talent grow though, and we will compete! |
Key Moves: |
Didn't
make a lot, but added Greg Garcia and Matt Joyce in deal
to add some offense. The drafting of thre M's Kyle Lewis
in round three was a good snag for the future for
Centerfield. |
Prediction:
|

On the
Farm: |
Sean Newcomb, Willie Calhoun, Amir
Garrett, Grant Holmes, Travis Demerite, Cody Reed, Jose
Berrios and several others who need some more seasoning
|
Strengths: |
With Jose Abreu at 1b, a catching tandem
of Brian McCann and Evan Gattis, along with Martin Prado
at 3b, there should be some opportunities for the
2,3,and 4 spots in the lineup to produce. The team is
hoping the closer role is better than last year with
Seung Hwan Oh. |
Weaknesses:
|
The lead-off spot, and 5th, 6th,
7th and 8th spots in the lineup
look a bit weak. Splits among offensive players are not
exciting. The starting pitching is a concern and for the
most part the bullpen is very granola. Lots of holes!
I think the GM spent more time in the George Dickel than
studying up for the draft. Rumor has it he has been
running in the same circles as Steve Sarkisia.
|
GM Thoughts: |
If young players do not pan out, this
team needs to be blown up. Many of the youngsters are in
the higher levels of the minor leagues, so this should
be a telling season for many of them. |
Key Moves: |
Team picked up Brandon Drury and Jace
Peterson for Carl Edwards as the lack of bats made it
necessary. Bottom Line: GM needs to get busy.

On the
Farm: |
Mad City Paddlers currently have 9 AAA
players including 6 pitchers. We do expect to drop at
least 1 AAA player though as we could us some middle
relief. |
Strengths: |
Our offense is strong and deep. It is led by
Trout, Altuve and Lucroy. |
Weaknesses:
|
Pitching. We have 3 VG starters but fall off after that. |
GM Thoughts: |
I like our draft but expect there will be
some in-season moves. |
Key Moves: |
Ryon Healy fell to us in the 1st
round. We didn’t need a 3B but he was too good to pass
on. We traded extra catching for Justin Bour to give us
some LH depth at 1B. |
Prediction:

On the
Farm: |
There are a few bright spots
in the minors, especially Eloy Jimenez and Lourdes
Gurriel who both could contribute soon. We also have
Morejon and Reid-Foley for our rotation but both are a
few years away yet. |
Strengths: |
The
draft went pretty well, but there was a huge need for the
rotation. Junior Guerra was the top pick and will most likely be
our ace for about 2/3 of the season. The GM took a strategy of
selecting young pitchers who might have had a poor season last
year but showed some promise. With nine guys in the rotation it
is hoped at least five will pan out. |
Weaknesses:
|
The
outlook for 2017 is grim at best. Call it a reset season. It
will be a miracle if we don’t have the top pick in next seasons
draft. |
GM Thoughts: |
As the 2017 campaign begins
the Ravens are looking at a long, painful rebuild. We
got to the playoffs very quickly two years back but
injuries, aging and poor long term deals have left the
roster very thin. The bats are not great overall and the
pitching is very weak. We do have pretty decent defense
up the middle and a solid closer in Addison Reed, but
lots of work is needed to get better. |

On the
Farm: |
Bombers were in a "good" place for the draft to balance
picking current useful players and stocking the farm.
Honeywell and Hader are the two arms hopefully to
impress the most. A plethora of 1B will hopefully bare
fruit soon, but the most exciting to the GM is 1B/3B
Jeimer Candelario. |
Strengths: |
Balance on
the staff and lineup are the strength this year. Lester and
Hendricks should lead the staff, Buchter and Thornburg look to
handle the 8th and 9th. |
Weaknesses:
|
The bench. A couple
of platoons are regular and the versatility will be a little lacking.
Hopefully the starters will be able to hold their own. |
GM Thoughts: |
The
GM is excited to see his 5th season of a rebuild
hopefully come together. Last year was disappointing as
the staff couldn't quite outshine the meager offense
enough. This year, there's a core to the lineup that
should remedy that problem. Hanley, LaMahieu, Saunders,
Story and Lamb should be a formidable top end of the
lineup and help provide leads for the staff to keep.
There will be disappointment if the team is not in
playoff contention. |
Key Moves: |
This
offseason the key move was grabbing staff ace Jon
Lester. He didn't come cheap, but, will hopefully push
the team over the edge to contention. In the draft,
Buchter and Thornburg were key additions to anchor the
pen. |

playoff bid for the Emerald City Bombers since the GM

On the
Farm: |
A
lot. Drafted 5 “aaa” players this year, mostly very
young starters, hoping that one might pan out to be the
ace this team so desperately needs. Elite position
prospects up the middle with Francisco Mejia at catcher
and Gleyber Torres and short. |
Strengths: |
Deep
minor league system with 7+ top 100 prospects, depending
on which experts you consult. No real strengths on the
major league club. Average lineup and average bullpen. |
Weaknesses:
|
Starting rotation is below average. A bunch of middle
and back-end rotation guys that will eat innings and not
much more. Lance McCullers could still develop into an
ace, if he can stay healthy with a larger workload.
More likely result is that he heads to the bullpen.
Here’s hoping at least one of the many teenagers in the
minors pans out. |
GM Thoughts: |
A
team destined for mediocrity this season and the near
future. If more minor leaguers develop than not, the
team could return to contention in a few years. |
Key Moves: |
No
big moves this year but will be looking to deal as we
near the trade deadline. |

|
4th

I’ll
say 72 wins this year. |

On the
Farm: |
JP Crawford is one that
I have high hopes for in a sim league format. Chapman’s
glove will really increase his value. Bird is solid and
I should end up with a decent platoon at 1B. Verdugo
has a cannon for an arm and may be able to stick in CF.
His hit tool is excellent, power may come. I am very
happy with Mitch Keller, Brady Aiken, and Luis Ortiz.
Both Keller and Aiken are a ways away from the majors
but have high upside. Ortiz should be a solid #3 in a
couple of years. David Paulino has the potential to
join Thor and Cueto leading my rotation in the next year
or two. |
Strengths: |
Infield:
Carter mans 1b with Greg Bird looking to take over next
year. Wong and Flores share 2B. Beltre is apparently
indestructible with Chapman and McMahon looking for a
chance. Andrus is a solid SS and JP Crawford has high
upside potential. If Yuliesky Gurriel hits as
anticipated he will also help at both 1B and 3B.
OF:
If Harper comes back which I fully expect this should be
a solid group next year if the CF defense comes along.
I expect McCutchen to bounce back. Dahl will be the 3rd
outfielder with Jay Bruce and Aaron Judge manning the 4th
OFer slot. Chris young makes a great platoon OFer.
SP:
Very solid top two with Thor and Cueto. Hopefully the
Mets and his health will allow Thor to get north of 200
innings this year. Leake and Kennedy are solid workman
like starters for the 3 and 4 position. I still hope
that Dylan Bundy will come around after his TJ. I am
really pleased with my SP prospects. The Bullpen is
ably filled out but not with a ton of innings. If Cam
Bedrosian can put together a full year in LA, he could
be an elite closer. Rosenthal can contribute if he
refinds his command. Dayton should be a stud LH set up
man. |
Weaknesses:
|
C:
A Mess – with Mesoraco, Salty, and Bobby Wilson with Tom
Murphy and Will Smith waiting in the wings. |
GM Thoughts: |
Beartooth entered into a
limited rebuild for the 2017 season. The rebuild mode
was triggered by Bryce Harper’s poor season combined
with Andrew McCutchen’s deteriorated performance.
Prince Fielder also exited the game taking away our
primary 1Bman (although Chris Carter came on to fill
that gap at least with some degree of capability. Mike
Matheny mismanaged Kolten Wong so a relative decline at
2B exists as well. Not surprisingly there was a hole in
the catching position as well with Mesoraco getting
injured again.
On the pitching front,
Luis Severino failed to meet expectations. Mike Leake
actually pitched well but the Cardinals poor defense
made him pay a price statistically. Syndegaard, Cueto,
and Kennedy all pitched well. |
Key Moves: |
Beartooth spent it’s 1st
rd draft pick on Sandy Leon who had a fantastic 6 weeks
at the plate while catching for the Bosox. He however
has never hit that well before or since. The
opportunity came to trade him along with Matt Bush
(hated to trade him since our oldest child is Matt Bush
born the same year) to Beale Street for Alex Verdugo,
Tom Murphy, and Trevor Rosenthal I have hopes for
Murphy to be a part time solution at C going forward and
Verdugo has the potential to be very good in the OF.
David Dahl came through very well but is only rated Fr
defensively in the OF with McCuthchen’s move out of CF,
I am looking for an outfielder who can handle the
requirements of CF defense but also not be a zero at the
plate. We used our MiL roster to fill in some high
potential SP prospects and a C. David Paulino also has
high upside as a SP prospect. |
Prediction:

3rd
place. Post Season on the horizon but getting
out of a tough division could prove more difficult than
expected. |
