American League Wild Card Round
AL Wildcard Series --- Springfield Isotopes (115-47) verse Capital City Capitals (107-55)

Box Score | Box Score | Box Score | Box Score |(Best of 5 Format)

In a matchup of the two teams that have represented the AL in the World Series the last four years, the Capitals squared off against the Isotopes.  Guessing this matchup set a record for the most combined wins (222!) between two wild card teams.

Game 1:  Isotopes jump off to a 4-1 lead after 4 innings before the Capitals get two in the 6th off a two run blast by the ageless Nelson Cruz.  Isotopes nurse a 4-3 lead until two outs in the 9th.  One out away from a win and no one on base, Candelario doubles and scores when Lindor singles him home.  Matt Kemp is the hero with a pinch hit double to secure the 5-4 Capital win.

Game 2:  Capitals stay hot and jump out of the blocks with a 5-2 lead after three, in large part to an Ian Happ blast.  Isotopes stop the bleeding though and score in the next three innings courtesy of a Robinson Cano (remember him?) 2-run shot and a Mookie Betts solo HR to take a 7-5 lead.  Isotopes pen decides to not blow the lead this time and shuts down the Caps the rest of the way to even the series.

Game 3:  Scoreless until the 5th, each team scores once.  Isotopes take a 3-1 lead in the 6th.  A Garrett Cooper HR extends the lead to 4-1.  Isotopes pen reverts back to giving up 9th inning runs as the Capitals score twice to cut it to 4-3.  Down to their last out with Realmuto on base, Lindor gets hit by a pitch and Cesar Hernandez walks to load them up for Anthony Rendon.  Isotopes get a huge break with a ground ball to second to end the game.  Playing with Fire becomes the bullpen's official motto.  Isotopes up 2-1.

Game 4:  Capitals explode for 4 in the 2nd and had the bases loaded with only one out but Isotopes escape further damage somehow.  Isotopes chip away with single runs in the 5th and 6th and eventually tie it at 4 with another Cano two run shot.  Tied in the 9th (again!), Isotopes collect 4 hits and 2 walks to score 4, taking an 8-4 lead.  With their backs against the wall, the Capitals make some noise but with the tying run on deck, Candelario flies out to end the series, giving the Isotopes a 3-1 series win.

All four games came down to the last out.  As so often is the case in these evenly matched series, they're determined by a lucky bounce here and there!  Congrats to Jason for an amazing season!
AL Wildcard Series --- Lincoln Tunnel Rats (87-75) verse Philadelphia Smackdown (87-76)

Box Score | Box Score | Box Score | (Best of 5 Format)

Rats sweep the Smackdown in h2h action

Game 1 - Rats Pablo Lopez takes a no-hitter into the ninth while the Smackdown's Lucas Giolitto allows 12 baserunners in 3 innings but only 3 runs. It was a tight 3-0 game until Ty France hit a 3-run homer in the bottom of the 8th to put the Rats up 6-0. That was the final and Rats take game 1.

Game 2 - Smackdown go up 2-0 in the 2nd on a Reddick clutch 2-run double but can't do anything else and Rats get single runs in the 7th (bases loaded walk to #9 batter .152 batting Jacob Nottingham after intentionally walking Tellez to load the bases - d'oh!) and 8th. Smackdown take the 3-2 lead in the top of the 12th on an Aledmys Diaz homer, but Rats Aaron Hicks ties it with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the 12th. Vogelbach then hit a 2-out single in the bottom of the 14th for the Rats 4-3 win.

Game 3 - Smackdown must have had a late flight home or something as being home did not help. Rats score runs in each of the first 6 innings - and not just a few runs, but 18 of them, including grand slams by Juan Soto and Rowdy Tellez. Ty France went 5 for 6 and Tellez went 4 for 5 with 8 ribbies. Rats take game 3 18-2.

Fun evening of h2h. Congrats to Robert on the h2h smackdown of the Smackdown.

It came down to a game 5 extra inning affair and the Confederates pull out the victory 2-1 to win the series 3-2.

NL Wildcard Series --- Purcellville Cannons (92-70) verse Siouxland Cyclists (89-73)

Box Score | Box Score | Box Score | Box Score | (Best of 5 Format)

Two first-time playoff teams battled in the NL Wild Card round.

Game 1 at Purcellville:  Happ vs. Freeland.  Cyclists chase Freeland with 5 runs in 4+ innings, then break it wide open with a 5-run 5th.  Meanwhile J.A. Happ goes 6 innings, striking out 7.  Daniel Norris gets a 3-inning save.  Curt Casali homers twice for Siouxland, while Miguel Cabrera, who found the fountain of youth this year in Siouxland, goes 3-5 with a 2 run homer.  Cyclists 12, Cannons 2.

Game 2 at Purcellville:  Mills vs. Hudson.  It was a tight game for 5 innings as both teams scored single runs in the 1st and 4th.  Siouxland chases Hudson with 3 in the 6th on back-to-back doubles by Castellanos and E. Rosario.  It was all Cyclists from there as they add runs in the 7th and 9th to win 7-2.  Alec (Perfect Game) Mills goes 6 innings for the win;  Jarlin Garcia with another 3-inning save.  Rosario and J. Bradley homer for Siouxland, Belt belts one for Purcellville.  Cyclists 7, Cannons 2.

Game 3 at Siouxland:  Canning vs. Means.  Albies puts Siouxland in front with a leadoff homer, but that's all the Cyclists would get.  Hard-luck John Means allows an unearned run in the 2nd and a solo homer by B. Crawford in the 3rd, then the bullpen gives up homers to Garver and LaStella and the Cyclists can't recover.  Canning goes 5 2/3 for the win;  four relievers pitch scoreless ball with Jeffress getting the save.  Cannons 4, Cyclists 1

Game 4 at Siouxland:  Ray vs. Heaney.  Cannons strike first on a solo homer by T. Hernandez, but Cyclists chase Ray with a 4-run 3rd;  Y. Gurriel with a 2-run single and Casali with a 2-run double.  Cyclists then put the game out of reach with 2 runs in the 6 and 2 in the 7th as Miggy homers again.  Heaney pitches 7 strong innings, striking out 9 and giving up 4 hits including solo homers by Hernandez and J.D. Davis. Bass finishes up with 2 scoreless.  Cyclists 8, Cannons 2.  Cyclists win series, 3 games to 1.

So congratulations to Patrick and the Cannons on making the playoffs for the first time!  The Cyclists' bats got hot at the right time, and Miggy continues to defy time in a memorable season.  The Cyclists now prepare to face the #1 seeded Bombers.
