2015 NLDS: Newark vs. West Orange
Game 1 (Oct. 14 @ West Orange): It was a
brave new world for the Panthers as they entered the postseason as a
division champion for the first time in franchise history. The extra
week of partying showed as nine pitches into game one the home team
was down one (Jordy Mercer single, to second on an errant pickoff
throw by Scott Kazmir, to third on a sac bunt by Ryan Braun and home
on a ground out by Troy Tulowitzki). Mercer, Braun and Tulo struck
again in the 3rd, with a little Edwin Encarnacion mixed
in to make it 2-0. The lead grew to 3-0 in the 4th before
Brett Lawrie smacked a 3-run homer off Carlos Carrasco to tie the
game. The home crowd’s happiness disappeared in the 5th
on Zach Walters’ one and only hit of the series: a pinch-hit grand
slam off Antonio Bastardo. The game was over except for the
shouting. Newark 7, West Orange 3. Newark leads series, 1-0
Game 2 (Oct. 15 @ West Orange): Lineup
changes were in order for the home team in hopes of matching
Newark’s offensive outburst. Out came Ender Inciarte and the
aforementioned Lawrie. In came Lorenzo Cain and Brian Dozier. Both
paid immediate dividends. Cain singled in his first AB and Dozier –
who’d been ticked about sitting against RHPs in September – whacked
the second pitch he saw over the left field wall to give the
Panthers their first lead of the series. Homers by James Loney in
the 2nd and Robinson Chirinos in the 4th
staked Alex Cobb to a 4-0 lead and he did the rest. Seven innings of
one-run, four-hit ball. West Orange 4, Newark 1. Series tied
at 1.
Game 3 (Oct. 17 @ Newark): The Eagles’
bats – and the West Orange gloves – made life tough for the visiting
Panthers in the early innings of the first game at Wrigley. Mercer
homered on Danny Duffy’s second pitch. Pitch number four saw Braun
reach on an error. Tulo singled (of course). After two outs,
Welington Castillo singled to bring home Braun. A Braun homer in the
2nd made it 3-0 Newark. Three doubles in the 4th
brought West Orange within one but more shenanigans in the field in
the 6th (walk, bunt single on what should have been a
sacrifice, an actual sacrifice, an intentional walk then an
unintentional walk) made it 4-2 Newark. Drew Pomeranz, Aj Ramos,
Greg Holland and Craig Kimbrel pitched 3.2 innings of no-hit ball to
save it for Anibal Sanchez. Newark 4, West Orange 2. Newark
leads series, 2-1.
Game 4 (Oct. 18 @ Newark): Number 4
starter vs. Number 4 starter. The soon-to-be retired Hiroki Kuroda
against James Shields, who pitched the last time West Orange and
Newark met in ’09. “Big Game” James was knocked around in one big
inning as West Orange plated 6 in the 2nd. The big blow
was a Chirinos three-run shot. Meantime, Kuroda allowed two runs on
a Khris Davis homer and 5 hits over 7.1 IP. All even. West
Orange 7, Newark 2. Series tied at 2.
Game 5 (Oct. 19 @ Newark): The only
extra-inning game of the series saw both teams squander bases-loaded
situations. Newark had the sacks full with the score tied at 1 and
none out in the 6th after a single by PH Ian Kinsler, a
double by Mercer and an intentional walk to PH Chase Utley. Then
Jeurys Familia went to work. Tulo – who finally started to cool off
– grounded to short to force Kinsler at home. Walters grounded to 1st
to force Mercer at home. Then Encarnacion swung at the first pitch
he saw and grounded out to 1st. West Orange returned the
favor with bases loaded and one out in the top of the 9th
as Chirinos grounded into a double play. The Panthers’ catcher would
redeem himself in the 11th when he hit a sac fly with the
bases loaded and one out to give West Orange the lead. In the bottom
of the 11th, Tulo started a one-out rally with a
four-pitch walk. Walters struck out but Encarnacion singled to set
up 1st and 3rd with A.J. Pierzynski due up.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, all of the double switches left the
pitcher’s spot behind him. With no pinch-hitters remaining, the
Panthers walked Pierzynski and Yusmeiro Petit struck out Gallardo to
end the game. West Orange 2, Newark 1 (11 innings). West
Orange leads series, 3-2.
Game 6 (Oct. 21 @ West Orange): Newark
came in depleted and worried. Tulo and his .400+ average in the
series wasn’t available to start but the Eagles still jumped out to
a 1-0 lead in the 1st but the Panthers answered back in
the bottom of the frame. West Orange took the lead in the 3rd
on a 2-out, 2-run double by Charlie Blackmon. Newark had a chance to
tie the score in the 6th with runners on 2nd
and 3rd and two out against a shaky Cobb but PH Walters
struck out. In the bottom of the 6th Wade LeBlanc came in
with one out and after retiring James Loney gave up a homer to deep
center to Robinson (‘Momma, there goes that man again”) Chirinos who
finished a white-hot .636/.615/1.545 with 3 HR and 6 RBI. Betances
finished things off with a four-out save and the Panthers’ unbeaten
streak in the NL playoffs moved to seven straight series. West
Orange 5, Newark 2. West Orange wins series, 4-2. |
