An ongoing feature on the TBBL web
site will include monthly
interviews with some of our
league members. Catching
up with our World Series winner
Robert Woertz:
TBBL: Hello and thanks for
taking the time to be
interviewed. How are you doing
today?
Bob: Doing pretty well, enjoying
the unseasonably warm weather.
Also enjoying the championship
win. I had thought that I was
just happy to make the finals,
but winning feels pretty good.
TBBL: Please tell us a little
bit about yourself. Married?
Kids? Where did you grow up,
what college did you attend (if
you did), and where do you see
yourself in 10 years from now?
Bob: Wow almost answered single
from habit, but I am recently
married in july, my wife has two
children, so now I am a step
dad. Even though we are married,
my wife and I live apart during
the week, me in NYC and here in
Maryland. I grew up in Lyndhurst
nj, attended a local college (Fairliegh
Dickinson in Rutherford NJ. Was
an accountant, then a trader,
then retired, then lost all my
money, so I am back to being an
accountant again. We recently
bought a home in Asbury Park NJ
(the jersey shore). So in 10
years I hope to be retired on
the beach.
TBBL: You are coming off your
first TBBL World Championship
and your team has been a playoff
contender the past few years.
When you first took over the
team tell us your first
impression of the club?
Bob: I thought it was a
pretty average team, but had
Lester, weaver and delmon young
who were all off disk at the
time so I was pretty excited
about the future.
TBBL: Do you have any players
on the trading block currently?
Bob: I am kind of feeling
uncertain about what next year
will bring. I have some great
pitching, but my offense and
bullpen are suspect. Wagner is
gone. I am thinking of trading
Rollins if there is any interest
and will probably have some
extra pitching to shop around.
TBBL: If there was one trade
that you could take back, which
trade would that be? And what's
the best trade you've made to
date?
Bob: Well I would have said
trading away Pettite thinking he
was done a few years back was a
bad one, but that trade is
starting to turn around for me
as Neimann seems to be coming
on. Key trade for me was getting
Soriano, since without him there
was no championship this year.
Delmon Young was key for me this
year, but I was thinking of
trading him when he was the “all
world prospect” and maybe not
doing that was a bad idea
considering what I could have
gotten for him.
TBBL: Shifting to the MLB
now, who's your favorite team
and why?
Bob: Yankees have always
been my favorite team. My Dad
turned me on to them and went to
quite a few games as a
youngster. First became a fan in
their lean years though,
remember seeing mantle pinch hit
at a live game. Always a bobby
murcer fan too.
TBBL: Which baseball stadiums
have you visited and which is
your favorite?
Bob: Yankee old and new,
Shea, angels, Toronto skydome,
citifield, Baltimore, Philly,
are all I can remember. Fav used
to be the skydome because my
company had a box that we got to
go to and thought the hotel
rooms in the outfield were cool.
TBBL: Who is your favorite
baseball player, both current
and all time?
Bob: All time was bobby
murcer, current I don’t think I
have one. Love to watch Jeter
all these years though.
TBBL: What is your favorite
movie of all time?
Bob: Caddie SHack
TBBL: Tell us something about
yourself that may surprise us.
Bob: When I was retired, I
went on a spiritual journey and
lead groups on trips to all
kinds of places like Egypt.
Macchu picchu, Mexico, Israel,
and Tibet
TBBL: Who do you have the
biggest rivalry with in the TBBL
and why?
Bob: Tough choice, rocky
and I seem to always be battling
each other, but there is the
more personal and emotional one
with my brother. Seems like
during the regular season we
take turns beating on each other
and was looking forward to
playing him in the league
championship this year, but he
lost before he got to me.
TBBL: What other DMB leagues
are you apart of and tell us a
little about your favorite
league (other than the TBBL of
course)
Bob: TBBL is my favorite
for sure, but I am in a couple
of back in the day leagues that
my brother runs, the BDWL and
the BDSL and the IBL another
modern league. I like all of the
them but prefer the modern
leagues because of the element
of uncertainty over what the
next year will bring (adds luck
to the equation which helps me).
IBL is cool because you get
rookies from a certain team. I
have the Royals so there are
some great prospects coming up
for me.
TBBL: If you were TBBL
commissioner for a day, what
would you change and why?
Bob: I really don’t think
I would do anything different,
only maybe minor change would be
to have a minimum usage rule
(but the commish cant do that on
his own). I really like how the
league is run and even if I
don’t 100% agree with all the
rules, I like how the rules are
enforced so we all are in the
same boat.
