An ongoing feature on the TBBL web
site will include monthly
interviews with some of our
league members. In our
fifth installment, the TBBL
recently caught up with Matt
Maher of the Midlothian Mashers.
Please enjoy the interview
below:
TBBL: Hello and thanks for
taking the time to be
interviewed. How are you doing
today?
Doing great.
TBBL: Please tell us a little
bit about yourself. Married?
Kids? Where did you grow up,
what college did you attend (if
you did), and where do you see
yourself in 10 years from now?
I’ve been married for almost 14
years. I have two children ages
6 and 8. I grew up in Richmond,
VA and
graduated
from VCU. In 10 years I hope to
have kids ages 16 and 18 and to
have been married for almost 24
years.
TBBL: Since you've been a member
of the Thunder Bay Baseball
League, your team has been a
perennial playoff team each
year. What is your best memory
of your team from any of your
playoff teams?
My playoff luck has been
horrific so the highlight was
winning a one game playoff at
the end of my second season to
actually get into the
postseason.
TBBL: Do you have any players on
the trading block currently?
No one specifically. I’m in
a tough spot because I don’t
really want to trade away
anything to get better because
there’s no way to top the Halos,
but I’m good enough not to trade
away guys for the future.
TBBL: What is the defining
moment -- the top highlight --
of your franchise these past few
years? And what is the absolute
worst moment -- the top
lowlight?
The top highlight is just
building an expansion team into
a playoff team after one year.
It looks like this could be my 3rd
straight playoff team.
The lowlights are easy. My
first year in the playoffs I
blew a 3-1 lead in the first
round, then I topped that last
year by blowing a 3-0 lead. I’m
sort of the anti-redsox.
TBBL: If there was one trade
that you could take back, which
trade would that be? And what's
the best trade you've made to
date?
I haven’t traded much so I
guess trading a high draft pick
for Freddy Garcia (though he did
help me make the playoffs).
The best was trading Aubrey Huff
for a 1st rounder
(Bobby Jenks) and B.J. Upton.
TBBL: Shifting to the MLB now,
who's your favorite team and
why?
The New York Yankees. I was
9 years old when my parents let
me stay up to watch Game 6 of
the World Series…Reggie hit 3
bombs and I was hooked!
TBBL: Which baseball stadiums
have you visited and which is
your favorite?
Let’s see I’ve been to Memorial
and Camden, the Vet and
Citizen’s Bank, Riverfront and
The Great American Ballpark,
PNC, PacBell, Fulton Co,
Stadium, Yankee Stadium, Fenway,
& the stadium in Oakland.
It’s hard to pick a favorite, my
top 3 would be Yankee, PNC, and
Camden.
TBBL: Who is your favorite
baseball player, both current
and all time?
My all-time favorite player
is Reggie Jackson, I actually
went to Cooperstown to see him
inducted into the HOF. My
favorite current player is ARod.
I guess you could say I like the
guys that other fans love to
hate.
TBBL: What is your favorite
movie of all time?
Probably Hoosiers.
TBBL: Tell us something about
yourself that may surprise us.
I’m the principal of an
elementary school.
TBBL: Who do you have the
biggest rivalry with in the TBBL
and why?
I’m not sure I have a big
rival yet, maybe Jersey and
Salem.
